outdoor entertaining at christmasAre you getting ready for a busy Christmas period entertaining at home? With this hot summer heat your patio and deck really is the best place for entertaining guests, so why not decorate the area to suit your festive events.

While filling every square inch of your lawn with lighting and Christmas decorations may not appeal to everyone, we’ve found some stylish and unique ways to give your outdoor area some Christmas cheer.

An old wheelbarrow can be used to jazz up your outdoor area by decorating with branches of evergreens, pine cones, twigs and ornaments. Terracotta pots filled with more greenery and fruit will also look great nestled inside. Similarly, you can use a galvanised pail, window box or wire basket to decorate with evergreens, pine cones, winter berries, grapevine balls, shiny ornaments and plastic snowflakes. All of these options will give you a festive arrangement that really stands out.

For a more functional decoration, create a beautiful light feature using a hanging basket filled with evergreens and an indoor lamp globe. You can decorate the globe by gluing Christmas shapes, like a snowflake, to the outside of the globe and fill with a string of battery-operated lights. You can also use a hanging basket to thread a string of lights through a coiled vine basket and decorate the inside with plastic ornaments.

Glass vases are simple, yet effective decorations that can be used in a number of ways; lining the walkway up to your patio or deck, scattered over the ground of your outdoor space, or spread over your outdoor table. As a base you can use fake snow, river rocks, evergreens, sprigs of cedar or magnolia leaves. As a layer over the base, winter berries, snowflakes, ribbons and pillar candles will all look great. A glass cloche is another great idea and can be filled with shiny ornaments, with a Christmas plate used as the base. Alternatively a glass cloche can be filled with a string of lights.

For a unique decoration idea why not display a Christmas message on your outdoor area. You can create a chalkboard sign with just some plywood and chalkboard paint, cut into festive shapes like a reindeer head, Christmas tree or a star. A different option is to use wooden letters to spell out festive words like merry, noel, peace and joy. Painting the letters in a green or red colour will give a festive feel. You can also use wire letters to display a Christmas message, and try threading a string of fairy lights through the wire for a bright touch. Buntings are another great option, and can be hung across your outdoor area to spell out various Christmas messages.

With so many different options, there’s no excuse not to give your outdoor area a unique and stylish, festive makeover – just in time for your Christmas entertaining with family and friends.
