So its happened. Your beautiful wooden deck has picked up an ugly smear across its surface. Whatever the reason for the stain, your deck now looks old and dirty. Fear not, all hope is not lost. With these tips, we’ll show you how to make that deck of yours look brand new again.
Firstly you’re going to want to clean the deck as thoroughly as you can. Use a stiff broom and sweep it down. Make sure to get all the dirt, leaves and such that are lodged between the cracks out.
Hose down your deck, taking into account any local water restrictions. Then mix a household cleaning product, like domestos, with a bucket of warm water. Using a stiff brush, scrub the stain with the cleaning product. If this doesn’t remove the stain, you may have to use bleach.
Before using the bleach make sure you cover any nearby plants with a plastic bag or similar. This is to prevent the bleach from discolouring or poisoning your plants. Also make sure to wear protective clothing, such as rubber gloves and safety goggles when handling the bleach.
The bleach should be mixed in at 1 cup of bleach per 4 litres of water. Scrub this thoroughly into the entire deck, not just the stain. This will ensure that the stain area is no lighter in colour than the rest of the deck.
Hose down the deck again, taking care that the run off water doesn’t flow into your plants. Cleaning your deck breathes new life into it, leaving it looking new and tidy. Prevention however, is better than the cure. So make sure to regularly hose down your deck every few weeks.
