Now we are a few weeks into 2014, it’s the perfect time to think about the trends and styles that will dominate outdoor areas through the year.

Over the last year, outdoor living saw a distinct shift from its traditional style (or lack thereof) of predominately plain and unattractive outdoor furniture and décor.

Moving into 2014, you could say outdoor living has well and truly got style!

There is now endless options for decorating your patio and deck, and all with just as much class as the rest of your home indoors.

If there’s any year that you can really experiment with your outdoor décor it will be 2014. Your motto should be to throw out the rules and have fun mixing up different colours and styles of furniture/decor.

While there are so many different ways you can decorate your patio or deck, consider which of the trends below are best suited to your home and personal style.

Stylish Outdoor Furniture

Gone are the boring and clunky outdoor furniture that lacked any style. 2014 will see more of the stylish and comfortable furniture you could also use indoors. Cane and wicker furniture will still be extremely popular this year, as will timber furniture in far more attractive and sleeker designs, along with powder coated furniture in striking colours.

Colour Blocking

One of the biggest trends we will see throughout the year is colour, and lots of it. Outdoor living will be about mixing as much bright and fun shades of colours into your patio or deck.

There is however a bit of a knack to getting the contrast of colours to work together. We recommend keeping the base colour for your outdoor area of white, grey, brown or black and then mixing up bright and bold pops of colour around the space.

Pattern Layering

Following on from the previous point, layering and mixing up patterns is going to be huge in 2014. Whether it’s mixing bold prints with geometric shapes, chevron prints or stripes, the more the better!

Throw out the rule book on clashing prints and patterns, and instead have fun mixing and matching with patterns on your furniture, textiles and any other outdoor decor accessories.

Nautical Theme / Coastal Living

Even if you don’t live by the water, the nautical and coastal style is perfect for outdoor living. This theme requires a lot of clean white (perhaps seating and tables) mixed up with coastal blues.

To really get into this style you could decorate your outdoor space with anchors, shells and lots of blue striped textiles.

Citrus Tones

As 2014 is the year to experiment with your outdoor décor, pops of citrus yellow, orange and green is a fun way of doing it. Whether it’s a statement piece of furniture or decorative accessories, the citrus tones are the perfect way to make a statement.

Adding citrus tones to your outdoor area is also great for the colour blocking trend.

Tropical Oasis

Cane furniture is perfect for this trend and instantly creates a bungalow feel in an outdoor area, even if you live in the middle of the CBD. You can really have some fun with this trend, mixing up prints of pineapples, parrots, flamingos, exotic flowers and palm trees.

The main point is to ensure there is lots of colour being splashed around your patio or deck. Deeper shades of colour, like grass green or forest green with rich mustard are great for mixing together with the bold and bright colours.

Multi-Use Furniture

Over the year we will see a real trend in outdoor furniture that is either multifunctional or motion furniture, or both. Think modular lounges, hanging chairs, tables and seating that incorporate growing plants, fire pit tables, hammocks and other swinging seats.

Stuck on ways to incorporate these funky trends into your patio or deck? Think well beyond just an outdoor dining table and chairs, ad consider making over everything from lounges, statement chairs (think Cane Peacock chair), cushions, throws, lanterns, pitchers & tumblers, hanging pot plants, watering cans, table runners and candles.
